Biden & the Issues Facing the Nation
While the economy and preserving democracy are top of mind for Americans, partisan differences fuel a lack of consensus about the nation’s policy priorities. Agreement does exist, though, when examining some of the most rancorous issues in U.S. society. Americans perceive crime to be a reality (not just a tool for political rhetoric), agree that healthcare is a basic human right, and that TikTok poses a threat to national security. The most contentious issues pertain to LGBTQ+ rights and the responsibility for providing universal healthcare. Amid this political environment, President Joe Biden receives tepid job approval ratings.
Donald Trump Investigations
Former President Donald Trump is engulfed in multiple investigations, including probes into a hush-money coverup, election interference, his handling of classified documents, and his involvement in the January 6th events at the U.S. Capitol. And, a majority of Americans think these investigations are fair. While most Americans do not go so far as to say Trump did something illegal, they do think Trump engaged in some type of wrongful activity. Trump’s legal woes mount as he campaigns for another term in office – a presidential bid that more than six in ten Americans do not want.

As concerns rise about potentially defaulting on the national debt, a majority of Americans divide about the best way to get spending under control. The 2024 Presidential Election
Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are warming to the idea of President Joe Biden as their party’s nominee in 2024. Marking a major shift in public opinion, half of those who identify or lean towards the Democratic Party now say the party has a better chance at winning the presidency next year with Biden at the top. This change in perception comes as Biden’s approval rating among Americans, overall, has inched up after his State of the Union Address last week. For former President Donald Trump, it’s another story. Trump faces a majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who continue to think the GOP has a better chance of winning the Presidency with someone else as the party’s nominee. His favorability rating among those who identify or lean towards the Republican party is at its lowest point since before his presidency in the fall of 2016.
