The 2024 Presidential Contest

In a potential presidential re-match, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump remain competitive with Biden scoring just three points more among registered voters nationally. However, when Robert F. Kennedy Jr. factors into the equation, Biden opens up a 7-percentage point lead over Trump among the national electorate. Kennedy’s presence erodes Trump’s lead among independents and cuts into his support among Republicans. Trump’s loss among his base is double the loss Biden experiences among Democrats.

The War Between Israel and Hamas

Americans express support for Israel in its war with Hamas. In fact, nearly two in three Americans say the U.S. should publicly support Israel, and a majority of Americans think the Middle East is safer with an expression of U.S. support. The military action between Israel and Hamas is of concern for most Americans who worry the war will lead to a greater conflict in the Middle East. Still, a plurality of Americans believe Israel’s military response to Hamas is appropriate. President Joe Biden, however, does not receive majority approval from Americans on how he is handling the situation.

2024 Presidential Contest

In a potential re-match, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are evenly matched among registered voters in a 2024 head-to-head contest. The two presidents remain competitive when third-party candidates factor into the equation. However, in the head-to-head matchup, Trump leads Biden among voters who dislike both candidates just as he did in the 2020 vote. Biden and Trump remain popular among their party’s bases. While Trump and Biden both face legal challenges, Trump appears more vulnerable than Biden.

Trump’s Indictments & 2024

Many Republicans are unfazed by former President Donald Trump’s legal woes. While a majority of Americans say Trump should abandon his 2024 presidential bid, most Republicans and nearly half of independents want Trump to carry on. About two in three who align with the GOP consider Trump to be the best person to lead the Republican Party in 2024 and plan to back the embattled former president over his Republican rivals. Trump leads GOP primary rival, Ron DeSantis, by more than two-to-one in a head-to-head matchup. And, bolstered by support among independents, Trump runs competitively against President Joe Biden in a general election rematch.

Views on Climate Change Getting More Partisan

While the news this summer has been filled with stories of extreme weather – record-shattering heatwaves, smoke-filled skies, and numerous flash floods – Americans have become less likely to prioritize climate change over economic growth than they were a few years ago. Meanwhile, their confidence in major institutions is, in many cases, at or near all-time lows.

More Trouble for Trump

Just ahead of new federal charges being filed against him, a majority of Americans believe Donald Trump has done “something illegal.” While an increasing majority of Democrats and independents say this, few Republicans do. But…the number of Republicans who believe he has done “nothing wrong” has dropped nine percentage points since last month.

The 2024 Presidential Candidates

While Republicans grapple with the controversy surrounding former President Donald Trump, more than six in ten Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say they think it is more important that their party’s candidate stand on conservative principles rather than be the most electable candidate against President Joe Biden. Looking at the crowded field of GOP hopefuls, Trump eclipses the field in terms of favorability. On the Democratic side, more than eight in ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents have a favorable view of Biden, dwarfing his Democratic challengers.

The Trump Indictment

In light of former President Donald Trump’s indictment by a Florida grand jury, Trump’s GOP base remains steadfast in its support for the former president. Most Republicans believe Trump should remain in the race, and his favorability among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents remains strong. However, a majority of Americans think Trump should drop out of the 2024 presidential contest.
