Index Summary The America Now: National Outlook Index (ANI) stands at 6.0, marking the lowest score in the more than two-year history of the Index. While the Health and Community Indices prevent the ANI from freefalling, noticeable declines in these areas are present. The Economic and Society and Government Indices are also in flux. Time for a (Generational) Change?

Most of the top elected officials in Washington are old. Much older than the average age of their constituents. Just take a look: Chuck Schumer 71, Joe Biden 79, Mitch McConnell 80, and Nancy Pelosi 82. Although Americans continue to vote for older politicians, in public opinion polls, they say they want younger representation. According […]

A Perfect Storm for EVs

Gas prices are on the rise and so are electric vehicle (EV) sales. Has the price at the pump given the EV industry a way to appeal to the average consumer?  On June 11th, the national average for a gallon of gas passed the five dollar mark, for the first time ever, peaking at $5.02. […]

The January 6th Hearings, July 2022

With looming concerns about the state of American democracy, a majority of Americans blame former President Donald Trump for the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, and half say Trump should face criminal charges. However, more than six in ten Americans (61%) do not think Trump will actually be charged. While a majority of Americans are paying, at least some, attention to the House January 6th hearings, inflation is top of mind for U.S. voters as they look toward November’s midterm elections.

Biden Approval Rating, July 2022

36% of Americans approve of the job President Joe Biden is doing in office, marking Biden’s lowest approval score of his presidency. Biden’s approval rating is down from 40% at the end of June and has slipped two points from his previous low of 38% earlier that month.

The president’s approval rating among Democrats has declined 9 percentage points, 84% to 75%, since last month. Nearly one in five Democrats (18%) disapproves of how Biden is doing his job, an increase since the last poll when he had a negative score of 11% among this group.

Americans are nearly four times as likely to strongly disapprove (43%) of how Biden is doing his job than strongly approve (11%).

America’s Mental Health Crisis

Americans are stressed out; they have been living through a pandemic, school shootings, and high inflation. Just in time, there’s a new mental health hotline launching, but it’s unclear how much it can do to fix what a majority of Americans believe is a broken mental healthcare system. According to a survey by Mental Health […]

Overturning Roe v. Wade, June 2022

In a majority decision, the United States Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade which, for nearly fifty years, guaranteed access to abortion in the United States. However, majorities of Americans oppose the Court’s ruling and have concerns that the decision will have broader constitutional implications. Following the decision, President Joe Biden asserted that Roe will be on the ballot in November. 61% of Americans agree, saying the Court’s decision will make them more likely to vote in this year’s midterm elections, and, by a double-digit margin (15 points), they think the decision will motivate them to vote for a congressional candidate who will support federal legislation that will restore the protections of Roe v. Wade.

The History of Juneteenth

Today is America’s newest federal holiday but most Americans don’t know much about it and don’t celebrate it. That’s not too surprising since the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was just signed into law by President Joe Biden last year. “On Juneteenth, we recommit ourselves to the work of equity, equality, and justice,” Biden said […]
