As the U.S. conflict with Iran escalates, a majority of Americans say they either oppose or strongly oppose U.S. military action in the region. While most Americans perceive Iran to be a threat to U.S. national security, just over four in ten consider the nation to be a major threat, and, when it comes to how President Donald Trump is handling Iran, a majority disapprove.
A majority of Americans (56%) oppose or strongly oppose U.S. military action in Iran. 44% either strongly support or support such action. When last asked in January of 2026, similar proportions of Americans had these views.

While more than eight in ten Americans perceive Iran as a threat to the security of the United States, 44% perceive Iran to be a major threat. An additional 40% say Iran is a minor threat, and 15% think Iran is no threat at all to national security.
Compared with just after the June 2025 U.S. airstrikes in Iran, slightly fewer Americans now say Iran poses a grave threat to the U.S. At that time, 48% of Americans said Iran was a major threat, 39% thought it was a minor one, and 13% reported the nation posed no threat at all to U.S. security.
70% of Republicans, up from 64% in 2025, perceive Iran to be a major threat. 27% of Democrats, down from 38%, share this view. In contrast, a majority of Democrats (54%) say the nation is a minor threat to U.S. security. Among independents, 40%, down from 45%, think Iran is a major threat to U.S. national security. An additional 46% of independents say Iran is a minor threat to American security.
36% of U.S. residents approve of how President Trump is dealing with Iran. When last reported in January of 2020, during a period of heightened tension with the nation, 42% of Americans approved of the president's approach. 54%, up from 49%, currently disapprove, and 10% are unsure. While most Democrats (86%) disapprove, 79% of Republicans approve. Fewer Republicans, though, approve of the president's approach in Iran compared with 2020 (88%). Among independents, 59%, up from 49%, disapprove of how President Trump is handling Iran.
