Majority of Americans Vacationing This Summer... Most Planning Domestic Travel
A majority of Americans are hitting the road this summer. Among those planning to take a vacation, more than seven in ten say they are travelling here in the United States. While a plurality of vacationers are seeking rest and relaxation, more than one in four expects to visit with family and friends, and about one in three have adventure or cultural experiences on their itinerary. And when it comes to the ideal length of a summer vacation, a plurality of Americans say one week is ideal.
57% of Americans are taking a vacation this summer, comparable to 55% in 2021.
Men (61%), Americans under 45 years of age (65%), and parents with children under the age of 18 (71%) are more likely than women (54%), older Americans (50%), and those without young children (52%) to take time off this summer.
More than seven in ten Americans who are taking a summer vacation (71%) plan to travel somewhere in the United States. 12% are travelling internationally, and 15% plan to travel both domestically and internationally. Two percent have a staycation in the works.
A plurality of vacationers (45%) are primarily looking to get some rest and relaxation from their time away. 26% are visiting family and friends, and 20% have adventure or exploration as their main vacation goal. An additional 10% of those taking a vacation want cultural or historical experiences.
Regardless of generation, a plurality of adults planning to take summer vacations say their main goal is rest and relaxation. However, members of Gen Z who plan to take a vacation (26%) are more likely than their older counterparts (Millennials: 21%, Gen X: 14%, and Baby Boomers and members of the Silent/Greatest Generations: 20%) to say they are looking for adventure or exploration from their summer vacation. Parents of young children (50%) are more likely than those without children under the age of 18 (42%) to be in search of rest and relaxation.
41% of Americans, regardless of whether they are vacationing this summer, say the ideal length of a vacation is one week. 35% say two weeks is the ideal while 13% prefer a vacation that is more than two weeks. 12% believe a long weekend is the best duration of a vacation.
Methodology
This survey of 1,381 adults was conducted June 23rd through June 25th, 2025 by the Marist Poll. Adults 18 years of age and older residing in the United States were contacted through a multi-mode design: By text or online. Results for all adults (n=1,381) are statistically significant within ±2.9 percentage points. Results for adults planning to take a summer vacation (n=778) are statistically significant within ±3.8 percentage points.
