NYC Residents More Likely to Root for the Yanks than Mets

It’s the quintessential baseball battle. The New York Yankees and the New York Mets will square off in interleague play this weekend. So, for which team will New York City residents be rooting in this Subway Series? In a survey conducted at the beginning of baseball season, nearly four in ten residents citywide, including nearly six in ten who follow baseball, say they are more likely to root for the Yankees than the Mets. When it comes to having the better season, the Yankees take the top spot.

  • 38% of New York City residents are more likely to root for the Yankees this baseball season than the Mets (24%). Four percent root for another team, and 34% say they don’t follow baseball.

  • Among New York City residents who follow baseball, 58% are more likely to cheer on the Yankees while 37% are more likely to root for the Mets. Six percent are for another team.

  • Queens is the only borough in which a plurality of residents (37%) are more likely to root for the Mets.

  • Nearly half of residents in the Bronx (48%) and Manhattan (48%) and more than four in ten in Staten Island (41%) are more likely to cheer for the Yankees.

  • In Brooklyn, residents are more likely to "bleed blue" for the Yankees (32%) than "blue and orange" for the Mets (21%). But, the plurality (42%) say they do not follow baseball at all.

  • New York City residents are twice as likely to say they expect the Yankees (64%) to have a better season than the Mets (32%).
