New York City is Yankee Town

It’s a rivalry for the ages – the New York Yankees vs. the New York Mets. But, in the eyes of New York City residents, there’s no comparison. By more than two-to-one, city dwellers consider themselves to be Yankee fans rather than Mets fans. This preference spans all key demographic groups, although more than one in four say they don’t root for a New York City team.

  • A plurality of New York City residents (43%) are Yankee fans while 21% are Mets fans. 27% are not fans of either team. Eight percent say they do not follow baseball.

  • Not surprisingly, residents in the Bronx (65%) are most likely to support their hometown, “Bronx Bombers.” The Yankees (35%) eke out the Mets (32%) in Queens and Staten Island with 27% reporting they do not favor either team.

  • Regardless of age, the Yankees are the preferred New York City baseball team. 46% of residents under 45 years of age support the Yankees compared with 40% of those who are older. More than one in four (26%) residents age 45 or older are Mets fans compared with 17% of younger residents.

  • Politics may be divisive, but New York City baseball is more unifying. 52% of Republicans and 45% of Democrats say they are Yankee fans.

“If you know me, you know where my allegiance lies,” says Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “However, regardless of whether you’re a fan of the Yankees or Mets, it’s just nice to have baseball this spring.”
