About Two-Thirds Think AI Will Eliminate More Jobs Than It Creates

Many Americans think Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will have a negative impact on jobs. In fact, two in three Americans believe AI will eliminate more jobs than it creates, and a plurality of residents nationally say they rarely or never use AI. Opinions about AI differ based on generation and gender.

  • 67% of Americans think AI will eliminate more jobs than it will create. 33% have the opposite opinion.

  • Gen Z (70%) and members of the Silent/Greatest Generation and Baby Boomers (74%) are more likely than Gen X (68%) and Millennials (54%) to think AI will have a negative impact on jobs.

  • Women (71%) are also more likely than men (62%) to say Artificial Intelligence will eliminate more jobs than it will create.

  • 41% of Americans rarely or never use AI tools. In contrast, 37% use them very often or often. 22% sometimes use AI.

  • Men (46%) are more likely than women (28%) to use AI tools.

  • Younger generations are more likely than older generations to say they use AI tools very often or often. 53% of Gen Z and the same proportion of Millennials (53%) say they have adopted AI technology. This compares with 36% of Gen X and 14% of Baby Boomers and members of the Silent/Greatest who say the same.

Methodology

This Marist Poll national survey of 1,542 adults was conducted July 17th through July 21st, 2025 by the Marist Poll. Adults 18 years of age and older residing in the United States were contacted through online web surveys. Results for all adults (n=1,542) are statistically significant within ±2.7 percentage points.
