Going into the last weekend of the campaign, Senator Barack Obama leads Senator John McCain 50% to 43% nationally among likely voters including early voters and those who are undecided yet leaning toward a candidate. Obama has held a similar lead among this group of voters for more than a month now. In a Marist Poll conducted in early October, Obama was ahead of McCain by 5 percentage points — 49% to 44%.

The Battleground: The Presidential Race in Virginia

With Virginia’s 13 electoral votes up for grabs, Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain are engaged in a competitive contest in Virginia. Obama leads McCain by 6 percentage points among registered voters. When looking at Virginia’s likely voters including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a candidate, Obama receives a majority of the vote — 51% — to McCain’s 47%, a four percentage point margin.

Obama has gained ground since a Marist Poll conducted earlier this month when he was ahead by 9 percentage points. The gap among registered voters now stands at 13 percentage points.

Thumbs Up for Governor Paterson’s Performance in Office: A majority of registered voters in New York State think Governor David Paterson is doing either an excellent or good job in office. Paterson has done well at winning over voters in the Empire State. In a Marist Poll conducted in April just weeks after taking office, many New York voters didn’t know much about their new governor. 35% of registered voters rated the governor well at the time but 32% didn’t feel they knew enough about him to have an opinion.

Senator Barack Obama leads Senator John McCain by 17 percentage points among both New Jersey registered voters and likely voters. Obama sprints ahead of McCain — 53% to 36% — among registered voters. Among likely voters, including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a candidate, Obama outdistances McCain 56% to 39%. The contest in New Jersey had been in jeopardy for Obama just last month following the Republican National Convention. In a Marist Poll conducted in September, Obama had 48% to 45% for his Republican rival McCain among likely voters. That was within the poll’s margin of error. Today, the political tide in New Jersey has turned in favor of the Democrat.
