Tri-state Area Residents: Expectations for Presidential Debate

President George Bush and Senator John Kerry face-off on foreign policy in the first presidential debate tonight. 70% of residents in the tri-state area believe the presidential debates make a difference in who wins or loses in November, and nearly one in five residents in the area say the debate will help them decide their vote. Most residents expect to watch at least some of the presidential debate.

Although neither President George Bush nor Senator John Kerry has a clear advantage among registered voters, Bush holds an edge over Kerry among those likely to vote on Election Day. Bush has the support of 47% of registered voters nationwide compared with 45% for Kerry. Ralph Nader receives 3%, and only 5% are undecided. Among likely voters, Bush receives 50% and Kerry receives 44%. Nader has 2% and 4% of likely voters are undecided.

New York State voters rate Governor Pataki: 43% of New York State’s registered voters rate the job Governor Pataki is doing in office as excellent or good. 55% rate the job the governor is doing as fair or poor. His approval rating was 41% in a similar poll conducted in April.

The presidential election in New York…closer but still blue: U.S. Senator John Kerry leads President George Bush in the campaign for New York’s 31 electoral votes. Kerry receives the support of 48% of the state’s registered voters compared with 40% for Bush. Independent candidate Ralph Nader receives 4%, and 8% are undecided. In a similar poll conducted in April, Kerry’s lead was 17 points.
New Yorkers React to GOP Convention and Rate Their Mayor

Second thoughts…New Yorkers shift on hosting the GOP convention: 53% of residents do not think it was a good idea for New York City to host the national Republican convention last week. 41% believe it was a positive thing for the city to do. In April, 59% of New York City residents were looking forward to welcoming the Republicans to New York this summer.
